Mrs. Susan Hurst Technology Teacher Mrs. Hurst was born in Elizabethtown, Kentucky and has lived with her family in Bardstown since she was 5 years old. Mrs. Hurst has been a teacher for 11 years, all at St. Joseph School. Education: I attended school here at St. Joe, attended Bethlehem, and finished at Lexington Technical Institute with an Associates Degree in Administrative Assistant, Business and Data Processing. I worked 11 years at American Greetings in the Computer Department. Family Information: Married to my husband, David, for almost 24 years. We have two beautiful daughters, Sarah, a junior at University of Kentucky and Cate, a senior at Bethlehem High School. Interests/hobbies: Reading and watching children play sports. Favorite sport: Basketball. Favorite animal: Dog- we have a Yorkie named Annie. Favorite color: Blue Favorite TV shows: CSI and Lifetime. Favorite vacation: Going to the beach with my family. What you like to do on a snow day: Sleep in, watch movies and cook. Favorite childhood memory: Spending the night with my grand-parents. My grandmother would make popcorn in a black iron skillet and put it in a brown paper sack and we would get a coke in a 16 oz. bottle all to ourselves. Facts about you: My family is very important to me and I like doing things for them. I usually talk to my mom and sisters at least once a day if not more. I was on the technology committee that started here at St Joe and helped raise the monies to create our computer lab. I worked for American Greetings at that time. I thought it would be nice to work where my children were attending school. Two years later, the technology teacher quit and I applied and was hired. I have seen many changes in my eleven years. It has been very rewarding and I learn something new everyday. The staff and students here at St. Joe are like family. Someone who was a positive influence: My mom raised six children ages 10-20 after my dad died at 50. She had never worked outside the home or drove before he died. She had to find a job and learn to drive while taking care of us and making sure we had what we needed. She did retire only then to take care of her mother and father until they died. She is now 79 and still is very active in the community helping others. I am very proud she is my mother. What you like best about teaching: Watching the children as they grow from kindergarten through the eighth grade. When I see a student struggling and then they get it, that is rewarding to me. Also, when former students see me and tell me thanks for making them learn how to type the right way and how it helped them in high school. Favorite quote: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference." The Serenity Prayer
