Mrs. Katie Garrett

Fourth Grade Teacher

Family information: I was born and raised on a farm in Lebanon, KY along with my three sisters. I moved to Bardstown 13 years ago when my husband, Chris, and I got married. (Oddly enough all of my sisters ended up in Bardstown.) Chris and I have three children: Ted (8), Bella (5) and Ben (2). I guess you can say teaching is in my blood. Two of my sisters are teachers. My mother, three of my aunts and an uncle are retired teachers. My brother-in-law is a teacher and my mother-in-law is a teacher going on her 30th year in the classroom. Education: I attended and received my Bachelors degree in Paralegal Science from Eastern Kentucky University. I recently received my Masters of Arts in Teaching from Bellarmine University. I am currently working towards my Associate Catechism Degree. Teaching experience: This will be my first year teaching and I'm very excited that it is with St. Joseph. I think it will be a fabulous year! I have been affiliated with the SJS for several years with my children attending, and my involvement with the volleyball program, Vacation Bible School, and substitute teaching. Interests/hobbies: I love to be outside--working in the yard, helping on the farm--anything that gets me outside. I also enjoy scrapbooking and crafts . . . and I still love to color. Favorite sport/activity: Volleyball and basketball are my favorite sports to play. College basketball and volleyball are my favorite sports to watch. Favorite Animal/s: When I was younger, my favorite animals were whales. I have no idea why, but I would read all about them in the Encyclopedia set we had. Favorite Color: My favorite colors change . . . right now it is pink and lime green. When I was in high school and college I did not like pink at all! Favorite TV show/s: TV shows are my weakness. My favorites are Brothers and Sisters, Sons of Anarchy, Castle, Private Practice, Life Unexpected . . .and of course, being a child of the 90s, Beverly Hills 90210 (the original!) and Gilmore Girls are my all time favorites! Favorite childhood memory: My favorite childhood memories are of my sisters and I working and playing on the farm. We have some good laughs thinking about things we did back then. Least favorite/strangest job: I don't really have a least favorite or strange job, but the first job I had was working at a Hallmark shop. I absolutely loved that job. Favorite trip/vacation: I have three favorite vacations. The first was mine and Chris's honeymoon trip to Maui. It was breathtaking. We can't wait to go back. My second favorite is all of our family vacations. A group of approximately 25 people always proves to be a great time. And thirdly was a girl trip to Key West, Florida. What you like to do on a snow day: I like to stay in my pjs and play games with the kids. After, of course, they wrap up in 25 layers and go outside and play for five minutes. Facts about you that you would like to share: The only thing I've ever won in my life was an inflatable canoe; it lasted for half of a trip to the river. My claim to fame is that I was voted "Most Athletic" of our senior class alongside Anthony Epps. What you like best about teaching: I believe what I will like best about teaching this year will be affecting the children's lives. I will also like learning from the students.
Someone who was a positive influence and why: My parents are positive influences in my life. They are the hardest working individuals I know. My mother went to school to get her Masters, worked full time and raised four children while my father worked 12-hour shifts at GE and farmed. My father, at 65, still works 13 to 14 hour days in the dead of summer and the coldest of winter farming three farms. Their determination and hard work is something to aspire to. My second most positive influence is Sister Susan Gatz, SCN. She is the most compassionate, kind-hearted, understanding and funny woman I have ever met. If I can be half the woman she is, I will be accomplishing something. Favorite Quote: Don't find fault. Find a remedy. ~Henry Ford
